Responding to the dramatic population growth of what was once a hamlet, Legacy ER & Urgent Care will open its seventh North Texas location on Oct. 21 in Prosper, an $8.8 million investment in the suburb that’s in western Collin County and eastern Denton County. It’s also the 33rd operational site for Plano-based Intuitive Health, Legacy’s parent company, since it opened in 2008.
The 11,072-square-foot medical center on Frontier Parkway is dedicated to addressing gaps in emergency care. Like other Legacy centers it’s designed to lessen patient wait times and high costs associated with treating non-emergent health problems in emergency departments, all of which Intuitive Health and Legacy’s co-founder and chief medical officer Dr. Jay Woody witnessed in his many years working in hospitals in Collin County and Dallas County.
“This is going to be our diamond facility,” said Woody, who is a graduate of UT Southwestern Medical School and resides in Frisco. “It has all the bells and whistles from what we’ve learned about providing care over the years.”

Legacy’s care model allows patients to be seen and be billed appropriately regardless of whether they require emergency care or lesser level urgent care, and the patients don’t need to know what care they need before entering the center. In brief, an emergency department treats illnesses and injuries in need of immediate attention, some of which include chest pain, abdominal pain, dehydration and complex fractures, according to information provided by Legacy. An urgent care center typically treats acute and chronic illnesses and injuries that are non-life-threatening; some of which include common colds, flu, strep throat and lacerations.

Information provided by Legacy shows that 84 percent of the 85,000 patients treated at Legacy ER & Urgent Care facilities in 2017 were billed at the urgent care level, saving patients and employers $20 million in unnecessary ER charges. Woody said about 80 percent of patients in Dallas-Fort Worth centers are billed at urgent care rates.
The Prosper site will offer a combined 24/7 full-service emergency room and an urgent care facility open daily from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. It will serve patients with an on-site lab and radiology suite, including an X-ray machine and a CT scanner. It will include six emergency rooms and four outpatient/non-urgent care rooms.
Walk-ins are welcome, and Legacy has in-network status with most major insurance plans. Information provided by Legacy reports most urgent care visits are completed within 45 minutes.

Woody said opening a center in Prosper has been under consideration since 2015 because many of the city’s residents travel to other Legacy centers in Collin County and have done so since the early years. They last considered opening a center in Prosper about two years ago, about the same time Data USA reported the city’s population grew to 31,507.
Statistics provided by the city, show Proper’s population grew to 42,598 at the beginning of 2024. Proper’s land area to 27 square miles, and it’s about 35 miles from Dallas’ downtown area and about 55 miles from Fort Worth.
Legacy’s expansion also comes as Collin County is experiencing a medical construction boom. Medical City Plano recently announced plans for a $76 million expansion and Methodist Celina Medical Center is scheduled to open in 2025.
Woody said the Prosper center could be followed by a center in Melissa within the next 18 months.

The open house in Prosper was over the top! The events for all ages (including a hot air balloon ride), face painting, balloon animals, and a taco stand made the event a family fun event. The facility was amazing with new equipment and technology that many hospitals would desire. The medical staff and facility made an impression to me.
