Triple Daytime Emmy award-winning journalist, author, and leadership speaker Gaby Natale is partnering with Susan G. Komen, a Dallas-based breast cancer organization, as an ambassador. In this role, Natale will utilize her platform and personal journey through breast cancer to educate and engage diverse audiences in the fight against this deadly disease, a press release stated.
Natale, executive producer and host of the TV show “SuperLatina,“ was diagnosed with breast cancer recently, undergoing multiple surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation. Now cancer-free, she’s using her experience to advocate for early detection and to support others affected by the disease.
Natale stated she’s committed to empowering women, especially in diverse communities, to advocate for their health and to break barriers in health equity.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Hispanic women in the U.S., with one in nine Hispanic/Latina women expected to be diagnosed during their lifetime, Komen’s press release stated. Research indicates Hispanic women often face greater barriers to accessing screening mammograms compared to other ethnicities.
To help educate and address these disparities, Natale will share her insights across Komen’s social channels, including cross-promotional posts, a podcast interview and the Komen blog. She will emphasize the theme of resilience in media interviews while advocating for timely mammograms, especially within the Hispanic community, which faces significant challenges in breast cancer outcomes.
Natale will lead the Beauty in Resilience campaign, which focuses on inclusive beauty and challenges outdated beauty standards. The campaign celebrates the strength and beauty of multicultural breast cancer survivors and provides crucial health education and resources, the release stated.
“This effort is about redefining beauty through the lens of resilience and strength and ensuring that every community has access to the information and care they need,” Natale stated in the release.
“There is someone in every state, every city, every community who has been impacted by breast cancer. Hispanic and Latina women, in particular, face later-stage diagnoses and need our support,” stated Krissa Smith, vice president of education at Komen, in the release.
As part of her ambassador role, Natale will participate in signature Komen events such as the 2024 Komen Dallas North Texas Race for the Cure and promote these events through bilingual media appearances.
Students in the inaugural class of the Doswell School of Aeronautical Sciences at Texas Woman’s University took their first flights with instructors on Sept. 5-6, marking a historic moment for the Denton-based university, which is the nation’s only university system with a focus on women.
The new aviation school offers two bachelor’s degree tracks: the Professional Pilot option, which prepares graduates for roles as flight instructors, corporate pilots, and private pilots, with the potential to become airline pilots after accumulating additional hours; and the Flight Operations option, which prepares graduates for careers in airport management and aviation operations, a press release stated.
Twenty-two of the Doswell School’s 24 inaugural class members are women. Currently, women account for about 5 percent of all commercial pilots, a figure the Doswell School hopes to increase. An orientation session for students interested in learning more about the TWU aviation program is set for Sept. 20. Visit twu.edu/aviation to find out more.
